Sharing Knowledge Responsibly: Creative Commons and the EYE Academy

Within the EYE Academy, we believe in the power of sharing to support young entrepreneurs globally. That’s why we’ve adopted Creative Commons licensing for our learning materials—making it easier, safer, and more consistent for our resources to be reused ethically.

We primarily use two types of Creative Commons licenses for EYE Academy materials:

1. CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

(Attribution – Non Commercial – Share Alike)

This is our default license for toolkits, courses, and content intended to be remixed and adapted.
  • Attribution (BY) - You must give appropriate credit to YBI as the creator.
  • NonCommercial (NC) - You can’t use the content for commercial purposes.
  • ShareAlike (SA) - If you remix or adapt the material, you must license your version the same way.
Why this type of license?
It encourages collaboration and adaptation, while protecting our work from commercial exploitation.

What this means for you:
You can build upon our materials in workshops, translate them, or localise content—as long as you:
  • Credt YBI
  • Don’t use it commercially
  • Share it under the same license

2. CC BY-NC-ND 4.0

(Attribution – Non Commercial – No Derivatives)

This is used when materials are intended to be shared as-is, with no edits or adaptations.
  • Attribution (BY) - You must give appropriate credit to YBI as the creator.
  • NonCommercial (NC) - You can’t use the content for commercial purposes
  • NoDerivatives (ND) - You cannot remix, transform, or build upon the material.
Why this type of license?
This ensures the content remains unchanged—perfect for fixed or sensitive resources like policy briefs or standardised training slides.

What this means for you:
You can share the resource with your network, but:
  • You must keep it in its original form
  • You must credit YBI
  • You cannot adapt or translate it without prior written consent from YBI
  • You cannot use it commercially

Important: Check the License on Every Resource

Each toolkit or resource in the EYE Academy is clearly marked with its Creative Commons license on the resource’s landing page.
Licenses may vary from resource to resource, depending on the nature of the content and how it is intended to be used.
Be sure to check the license every time you download or share a resource.

Tips for Using Licensed Content

  • Always check the license first. It’s listed on the resource landing page and/or within the file.
  • Use the correct attribution format: “This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License by Youth Business International.”
  • Link to the license. e.g., https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/4.0/
  • Need to adapt a resource? Only CC BY-NC-SA licensed content may be modified or localised.
  • Have come across a material that has been developed by YBI in partnership with a third party? Licensing may differ—double-check before sharing or adapting.
